Can you believe it’s June?!  Where has the time gone?

I hope each of you had an opportunity to attend the NALS of Michigan 40th Annual Meeting and Educational Conference held at the Amway Grand Plaza.  The speakers on Friday were excellent and business on Saturday went without a hitch.  State officers elected for the 2001-2002 year are as follows:

President Beverly L. Points, PLS

President-elect:  Marion R. Stone, PLS

1st Vice President:  Sherri J. Bowden, PLS

2nd Vice President:  Robert A. Rineman

Secretary:  Nancy M. Comfort

Treasurer:  Kathy Ann Blunck

Parliamentarian:  Karen N. Shively, PLS, CLA

Immediate Past President:  Carole M. Schneider, PLS

You should recognize two very familiar names on this list--please take the time to congratulate Sherri and Karen the next time you see them!

The only mailing I have received from NALS to date is the April edition of Leading the Way.  A copy will be available at the June meeting for you to look at along with a sign-up sheet for copies.

Law Day was wonderful!  Many many thanks to Ruth Dillon and Patsy Hooker, PLS, for sharing this committee this year.  Judge Benson was great, even if he did tell the Blue Room story.

Mark your calendars for July 19.  NALS of West Michigan will be offering a seminar regarding sexual harassment.  One or two little details are being worked out yet, but all of the information should be available at our June 14 meeting.  Please plan to come.  This seminar will be for both members and non-members—invite someone to come with you!  Complete details will be sent to your firm reps. If you have not received it by June 15, please let me know.

The Region 3 meeting is coming up fast.  It will be held on July 27-29, 2001.  Registration is $65 and the room rates are $39.  In addition to a tour of the Cook facility on Friday and the seminars offered on Saturday, the PLS exam will be offered on Sunday.  Those of you who are missing some of the sections or plan to take the exam in September, you may want to reconsider and sign up for this session.  It will be the last time the PLS exam will be given using Irwin as a reference.  Beginning in September, Gregg will be the standard.  If you have not yet received a registration form, please contact your firm rep.

As many of you know, Pat VanHemert is recovering from back surgery.  Please remember to put in a good word for her.  She will be out until the end of June.  Her phone number and address are available for those of you who would like to call, stop by or send a card.  If you call or stop by, give her extra time to respond.  Remember, she’s movin’ slow.

Sadly I have to tell you that Marguerite Milanowski passed away.  She was a member of our chapter years ago, and received the honor of Legal Secretary of the Year.  I realize that many of our current members did not know Marguerite.  I have to admit that I didn’t know her but I knew who she was.  Many of you will remember her as the older lady in a wheelchair who has consistently attended our Awards Night with her son.  Flowers and a card have been sent on behalf of our chapter and a little something will be missing from this year’s Awards Night.  Many thanks to Gena Rinckey, PLS, for ordering flowers and to Linda McCullough, ALS, for sending a card.  If you would like to contribute money towards the flowers, it would be greatly appreciated.  You may do so at the June meeting or by contacting Gena Rinckey or me.

I’m certain you’ve noticed my frequent instruction to contact your firm rep.  Your firm rep is your liaison between you and the board.  That doesn’t mean you can’t communicate with board members, it just means that it is your firm rep’s job to make sure all information you have is current and up to date.  Yet another item you will be receiving from your firm rep is the monthly finance report.  You should have that well ahead of any monthly meeting.  And to all of you who serve as firm reps, if you’re not getting the information you need, speak up.  That’s definitely something your board needs to know!

So, I will see you on the 14th.  Remember to send in your registration for Region 3.  Plan on attending the seminar scheduled for July 19.  Bother Pat VanHemert.  Think about who you want to nominate for Legal Professional of the Year and Award of Excellence.  Enjoy what you do--it’s not worth bothering with unless you do!

NALS of Michigan 40th Annual Meeting and Educational Conference

I had the pleasure to attend and participate in the NALS of Michigan 40th Annual Meeting and Educational Conference May 3 – 6, 2001.  It was my first time attending this amazing weekend event, and I can’t tell you how much I enjoyed it!  I received a First Timer’s welcome Friday morning at a continental breakfast with Carole Schneider.  I assisted with hosting the Exhibitor’s Luncheon Friday afternoon, and I attended an excellent NEI seminar all day Friday hosted by Julie Settimo and Charlyn Brown.  On Saturday I sat through the business meeting as an alternate delegate, and learned a good deal about the business of NALS of Michigan.  I attended the Saturday banquet and installation of NALS of Michigan offers for 2001/02, and the Sunday brunch.  It was an inspiring and motivating weekend, and I met many members from other Michigan chapters. Their enthusiasm and dedication to NALS is contagious.  I would urge any of you who have yet to attend an Annual Meeting to consider the 41st Annual Meeting to be held next year in Kalamzoo.  You will love it!  A special ‘thank you’ to everyone in our chapter who helped make this weekend so rewarding for me.  It was nice to spend time with many of our own members who I hadn’t really gotten to know before the meeting.  I believe that the best way to get the most out of something is to get involved!  I’m glad I did!

Law Day – May 10, 2001

The NALS of West Michigan First Annual Law Day Breakfast was held on Thursday, May 10, 2001 in the Continental Room at the Amway Grand Plaza.  Please refer to the report submitted by Ruth Dillon for more information on this wonderful meeting.

At the close of Law Day I read various correspondence from other Michigan chapters thanking NALS of West Michigan for the great job they did hosting the NALS of Michigan 40th Annual Meeting.

Treasurer's Report June 2001

[I would like to apologize to Kristi for not getting this report published in the May 2001 edition of Dateline West Michigan, as she did submit it on time for that publication.]

I want to tell you how excited I am to be Treasurer of NALS of West Michigan
and how anxious I am to get our Association financially organized and off to
a good start this new fiscal year.    Because I have not been in office for
an entire month yet, I have no formal "financial report" to make, but I
would like to update you as to what I've been doing with the Association's
time during the months of April and May.

As soon as I was elected Treasurer, I began calling local financial
institutions regarding monthly fees and service charges effected on their
"non-profit" customers.    All "downtown" banks indicated that would need to
charge the Association a monthly service fee, plus a fee for each deposited
item and each check written on the account.   These costs added up to
roughly $12.00 per month (nearly $145 per year), an unnecessary expenditure
as far as I was concerned.   Consequently, the Association's account has
been moved to BellCom Credit Union, who has a "no service charge/no per-item
fee/no minimum balance" checking account.    In fact, our first fifty checks
were free!  (Free is good).    Our first deposit has been made, a couple of
checks have been written, and things are up and running with BellCom.     I
would like to  advise/remind  ALL members of NALS of West Michigan that they
are eligible to become members of BellCom, and enjoy their "no fee/no
minimum balance" checking, as well as the other financial services they have
to offer.   If interested, please contact one of their branch offices or any
of the Credit Union Service Centers.

While I am extremely excited to serve as Treasurer of NALS of West Michigan,
"Treasurer" is only one of the many hats I wear, in the Association, in the
office and at home.   For those of you who do not know me well, I am a
married mother of 4 girls (ages 2 - 10), I am also Kindergarten Room Mother,
and Girl Scout Leader to my 4th grader's Junior Scout Troop (girls, girls
everywhere!).   I enjoy my family and my job.   I've worked for Tom Weibel
at Smith, Haughey, Rice & Roegge for a little over 16 years (I started when
I was 5-years-old).    I am on the Technology Committee for the Association,
I am the Scholarship Chair, and I was a part of the 2001 Annual Meeting
Committee.     I can walk and chew gum at the same time, at least on most
days  . . . and, although my life is busy, I'm always willing to try and
challenged by something new.   And there you have it -- my life in a
paragraph!

Let me thank you, once again, for allowing me the opportunity to serve as
your Treasurer for the 2001-2002 year.   I look forward to working with many
of you and getting to know each of you a little better.   If you ever have a
question or concern about the Association's financial situation, please give
me a call.    Thank you for putting your trust in me.

Kristi Gaskin; Treasurer  kgaskin@shrr.com

ANNUAL REPORT for 2000 - 2001

(submitted May 20)

We had a tremendous year for our PLS Study Group this year. We had 13 participants, with 7 sitting for the exam in March. This year's instructors were myself for Section I, attorney Jay Rosloniec for Section III, and Cindy Root for Sections II and IV. From all the feedback I received from our study group participants this year, it seems that our study group was a great success. I received calls from Grand Valley and Ferris Colleges regarding our study group and gave them information regarding how our study group was run, our schedule breakdown, and the books that we had our participants study from. They were very appreciative. I have been searching for ways that we can improve our study group for the upcoming year, focusing on ways to better prepare for Section IV, Legal Knowledge and Skills, as this seems to be the section that several of our participants felt they had the most problems with. I wish to thank the Association for allowing me to chair this important committee and I look forward to tweaking it to even higher standards in the year to come. I wish to thank Cindy Root and Jay Rosloniec for their assistance this year and look forward to working with them next year as well.

Employment Report

ANNUAL REPORT for 2000 - 2001

(submitted May 20)

I have thoroughly enjoyed being the Employment Committee Chairperson for the past few years. This year I focused on contacting individual law firms and advising them of our services. I put notices in the Transcript for all positions available, as well as announcing those openings at our monthly meetings. I put reminders in the Transcript about our services and reminded members to forward their resumes to me or let me know if they want me to be on the look out for that "special position". I have made this reminder announcement at our monthly meetings as well. My suggestions for the upcoming year would be to continue to reach out to the various law firms to keep our association in mind if they are looking to fill a particular position. We also need to continue to stress to our members that this is a free and useful tool to take advantage of in their search for new employment. Gail Naylor has volunteered to chair this committee for the 2001-2002 year. Thank you Gail for your assistance. Good luck and feel free to contact me with any questions.

LAW DAY 2001

(submitted May 20)

The First Annual Law Day Breakfast was held on May 10, 2001 at 7:15 a.m.  We had a beautiful buffet in the Amway Grand's Continental Room with a great menu and lots of coffee.  Our speaker was The Honorable Robert A. Benson, who spoke about his experiences, in the office and the court room, on "Mistakes Lawyers Make That They Blame on Secretaries or Who's Really in Charge?"  Judge Benson suggested we look up the word "secretary" which reads in part, according to The American Heritage Dictionary, Second College Edition:

A person employed to handle correspondence, keep files, and do clerical work for an individual or company. ..

My Thesaurus also had added words like "scribe, typist, aide, clerk, receptionist."  The picture painted a secretary to be much more than just one person!  Perhaps in today's world, the word "assistant" should, as Judge Benson suggested, replace the word "secretary."

We had a great turn-out, with many guests in attendance -including some attorneys and Judges Kolenda and Logan.  Thank you to those who made our First Annual Law Day a memorable event!
